What Should You Eat While Detoxing?

Detoxing

We are exposed to toxins every day in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Fortunately, the body has a built-in detoxification system to help remove toxins.

Detoxing is something that should happen in everyone’s body naturally throughout every day. Being mindful of the quality of the food you’re eating and water you’re drinking is a great way to limit your exposure to toxins.

Another way to help support your body through the detoxification process is to temporarily do an elimination diet where you take out certain foods that can be inflammatory.

Dr. Leo and his staff can help successfully guide you through the detoxification process.

Cut Gluten, Dairy, and Grains

Gluten, dairy and grains can cause inflammation in a lot of people. They can naturally contain excessive omega-6 fatty acids, heavy metals, pesticides, carbohydrates, and molds. All of these can cause a body to have an inflammatory response. What are examples of grains you should avoid?

  • Oats
  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Spelt
  • Triticale
  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Millet
  • Sorghum

Leaky gut, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and altered intestinal bacteria can commonly be linked to grains. By following a gluten, dairy, and grain-free diet, you can help quell inflammation naturally. In addition to reducing inflammation, you may also notice healthy weight loss, improved digestion, and improved blood sugar levels.

Consume Plenty of Organic Fruits and Vegetables while Detoxing

Eating lots of organic fresh fruits and vegetables is a great way to help flood your body with nutrients while limiting toxins. Organic fruits and vegetables contain less pesticide residue, don’t have genetically modified properties, and are nutrient-dense foods. When you’re trying to really rev up your detox it’s a good idea to consume good quality organic foods so that your body doesn’t have to work harder to detoxify any added toxins.

Fruits and vegetables naturally contain many properties that help the body detox naturally. Some also contain anti-cancer compounds. They are loaded with fiber and antioxidants, and can also help calm inflammation in the body.

Eat Organic, Grass Fed Meats while Detoxing

Conventional meat often comes from animals raised on feedlots or trapped in barns, not allowed access to lush grazing pastures. When you choose organic, grass fed meats, you know that the animals have had abundant access to water, sunshine, and plenty of grass. You can take it one step further by finding a local farmer to purchase quality local meats from. Conventional meats often have higher omega-6 levels, which can cause inflammation.

Grass-fed meats contain higher omega-3 levels, which help fight inflammation. Another good source of nutrient-dense foods are organ meats like liver, heart, and tongue.

Drink a Detoxing Smoothie

Using fruits and vegetables you probably already have in your refrigerator you can whip up a detox smoothie as a delicious breakfast or snack. Packed full of nutrients, it’s like drinking a multivitamin. Using a high-powered blender is a great way to mix up all the ingredients so there aren’t any chunks. How do you make a detox smoothie?

  1. Pour ½ cup of coconut water or filtered water in your blender
  2. Cut up one organic apple, add and blend
  3. Add ½ cup pineapple chunks, ½ cup frozen banana, and a small chunk of fresh ginger and blend
  4. Add a palmful of fresh cilantro and a handful of spinach and blend

This is a general recipe, and when available, you should use fresh organic fruits. You can also add avocado to make it creamier. Orange or other fruit juice can be substituted for coconut water.  Fresh organic fruits are great for detoxing!
